Recording approach
The technical approach to each recording is considered and tailored to the particular nature of the performance - the location and instrumentation being the most important considerations. The general intention is to capture a realistic rendition of the performance as it might be perceived by a listener in an ideal seat. This generally involves balancing the detail and definition of the instrument or ensemble - as it would be heard from a very close distance – with the warmth and sense of space that is afforded to the sound as it reflects around the surfaces of the performance space.
This usually requires balancing signals from several microphones positioned at different distances from the performance. Our intention is to use the fewest number of microphones necessary to capture the sound, but enough to allow for this balance to be effectively achieved.
