Overview
Walter Wurzberger was a refugee from Nazi Germany
eventually arriving in England via France and Australia. He composed a full
gamut of works including five string quartets, three of which make up this CD.
They themselves cover the range of his composing career from the second quartet
dating from his time serving in the Australian army, through the serial fourth
quartet to the late fifth.
String quartets are regarded by many as one of the
most intimate forms of chamber music. Words can rarely if ever really express
what lies within and behind the music. As the composer himself wrote in 1989:
“Words do not explain…..the entire personality of
the composer, his aspirations, fear, terrors, but also his joys and happiness”.
